The short version

  • Everything you enter is stored on your own device by default. Nothing is sent anywhere unless you turn on the research feature.
  • We do not ask for your name, email address, or phone number, and we do not use your location.
  • We do not carry advertising, and we do not use advertising or analytics trackers.
  • We never sell or share individual records.
  • The research feature is optional, off by default, and can be turned off again at any time.

Data stored on your device

Your swim history, questionnaire answers, scores, height and weight, reminder settings, and preferences are stored locally on your device. We cannot see any of it.

Deleting the app removes that data from your device. If you have contributed to the research dataset, deleting the app does not remove those contributed records — see the section on withdrawing below.

The optional research programme

Consent

The default setting is opt out. You give consent in the app's Research tab, by reading what taking part involves and then signing in with Apple to confirm. Consent is given separately in each app, and you can opt in or out of each one at any time.

You must be 18 or over to take part.

What is collected

Age, sex, country, and the scores produced by that app — swim lengths and swims per week for Cold Water Swimming Therapy; total, food and lifestyle scores, BMI and risk category for the Food and Lifestyle Scale; the total score for the Kessler 10.

Your individual questionnaire answers never leave your device, and neither do your swim locations.

How you are identified

Records are filed under a hashed identifier derived from your Apple ID on your device. No scopes are requested at sign-in, so Apple returns no name and no email address, not even a private relay address. The Apple identifier itself is never stored and never transmitted — only the hash, which cannot be reversed.

Because the same identifier is produced in each of our apps, records from someone taking part in more than one app can be linked. That is deliberate, and it is disclosed here so you can decide accordingly.

Where it is held

Research records are held in Australia, in the Sydney region, encrypted in transit and at rest. Grouping, the exclusion of your own records, and the ten-participant floor are applied on the server, so no individual record is ever sent to a device — including yours.

Records are kept for ten years from submission and are then permanently destroyed. Only the most recent 12 months is used for the figures shown in the apps.

Withdrawing

You can withdraw at any time from the app's Research tab. When you do, you choose whether we keep the records you have already contributed, or delete them. Withdrawing is your opportunity to delete the data you have contributed.

Withdrawing stops any further collection either way.

Publication

Findings are published as group results, in research literature and other publications, and aggregate results and norms may be licensed or sold. Individual records are never published, sold, or shared.

Children

Our apps are not directed at children, and the research programme is open only to adults aged 18 and over. We do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 18.

Full policies

Each app has its own full privacy and consent policy, which is also linked from inside the app:
