Optional · opt-in
Each app includes an optional research feature. It is off by default, and the app works exactly the same whether you take part or not.
The default setting is opt out. Each app has its own Research tab and its own consent, and you can opt in or out of each one at any time.
Nothing is collected unless you opt in. If you never open the Research tab, nothing leaves your device.
No name, no email address, no phone number, and no location.
Records are filed under a number worked out from your Apple ID on your device. We never see your Apple ID itself, and we never ask Apple for your name or email address — no scopes are requested at sign-in, so nothing identifying is returned to us in the first place.
The number is a one-way hash. It means nothing outside this research and cannot be turned back into who you are. It is what lets your records link up over time, and across apps if you take part in more than one.
The point of collecting this is to build norms, so participants can see how they compare with others. Each participant counts once, using their most recent record in the last 12 months. Your own records are left out of the group you are compared against, so a country's figures appear only once ten other participants have taken part.
The app can only read grouped statistics. It cannot retrieve an individual record, including your own.
You can stop at any time. When you withdraw you choose whether to leave the records you have already contributed in the dataset, or to delete them. Withdrawing is your opportunity to delete the data you have contributed.
The norms are recalculated from whatever data exists at the time, so deleted records stop contributing to them immediately.
Results are published as group findings, in research literature and other publications. Aggregate results and norms may also be licensed or sold. Individual records are never published, sold, or shared.
The research feature is a prototype pending ethics committee approval, and may not always be active. The data custodian is James Anderson, on behalf of Australian Psychological Research Pty Ltd.
